COFFEE MAKER

PRODUCT DESIGN
result of multidisciplinary collaboration during
an exchange semester in Denmark
This project emerged as a part of the collaboration between students of environmental technology engineering, product development, product design and virtual engineering. Our team was supposed to redesign a coffee maker in the most sustainable way. By analyzing the life-cycle of a coffee machine, it quickly became clear that the highest contributor to the embodied energy is the use phase.

We developed a coffee maker which is entirely cut from the electric grid and powered completely by human power. Using bicycle power to create friction from the rotating wooden piece on the bottom of the stainless steel cup, the heat required to boil water is produced. The whole process of preparing the coffee would take up to a 15-minute bike ride to work or school.
